The William Jones Building sits prominently on the quad at the historic heart of Monmouth School. A crisply detailed red sandstone façade and dark zinc roof sets the tone for the architectural design of the new academic building and sees it comfortably respond to the scale and gravitas of the neighbouring Victorian buildings.
Designed as a contemporary interpretation of the listed buildings, its vertical proportions and high quality finishes create a striking addition to the school estate. The school buildings are on a tightly bound town centre site and this first phase of the ‘new heart’ project follows the strategic decision to replace limited existing buildings with more effective and efficient modern accommodation.
The William Jones has nearly four times the accommodation than its predecessor and by excavating the site and retaining adjacent buildings it links the upper and lower parts of the school site. The 21 classrooms of this first phase of building are designed to provide the optimum learning environment for pupils.
The modern spacious rooms are designed to optimize the use of daylight and natural ventilation whilst minimising heat loss and energy consumption; using low energy electric lighting and mechanical ventilation system (with heat recovery). The correct level of lighting and ventilation are achieved and the indoor air quality and CO² levels are kept in balance to optimize pupil health and concentration for teaching.
The building also houses administrative and the Headmaster’s office plus conference and lecture facilities. The next phase of building will house a further two teaching departments, recreation space and new kitchen and dining facilities.
